2018 SDSE
Sylvain from Singapore

My name is Sylvain, I am 18, and I am currently a scholar at an international school in Singapore. I have been benefiting from the mentorship program of Brighteliteburkina since 2016. Thanks to the dynamic guidance I was provided with, I attended the Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) program in Ghana in August 2017, the Yale Young Global Scholars program in the United States in July 2018 and finally got the UWC scholarship. But I would like to specifically talk about my experience at YYGS.

Yale Young Global Scholar is a two-week summer program organized by Yale University every year on its beautiful campus in New Haven. Basically, there are four sessions, each of which is about either social sciences or applied sciences and technologies. I went to the social sciences session which ran from the 8th to the 21st of July. The topic of the session was Sustainable Development and Social Entrepreneurship (SDSE).

It was a life changing experience that I break into three main points of interest:

Academic enrichment:
YYGS consists of lectures and seminars. During the two weeks that I spent there, I attended in total eight lectures and eight seminars taught by eminent professors at Yale. From these various seminars and lectures, I learned countless things that I could never have learned at school. Among others, I learned how to conduct efficient and professional real-life research. I had the opportunity to practice speaking the language with native speakers and improve my skills. I learned how to confidently express my opinions in public and how to lead a group.

Networking:
YYGS is an incredible opportunity to bond with people from different backgrounds, different cultures, and different countries and this is something valuable. There were in total 268 students from 126 different countries in the SDSE session. I made friends from the USA, Canada, Abu Dhabi, and China, just to name a few. We are still in touch and even planning to visit each other’s country very soon. It is not only about friendship but also about aspirations and collaboration. As young students, we all have our own dreams and plans for the future, and YYGS gave us the opportunity to meet students sharing the same aspirations and learn from each other.

Certification From Yale:
At the end of the session, everyone received a certification from Yale, attesting that we had completed a program at the university. Knowing that Yale is one of the prestigious universities in the U.S., this certificate weighs a lot on a student’s resume. Coming from a French-speaking country and possessing a certificate from such a great university is just unbelievable.

Overall view:
I would definitely recommend YYGS to anyone because it has a great impact on our future as students, and allows you to become a global citizen. It is an experience that my words cannot describe. If you were to apply, put your heart in the application, and be honest and simple. There is a scholarship available to those who meet the criteria. Never doubt yourself, they are not looking for groundbreaking grades.
